There are basically three types of breast
pumps available in market today. They are manual breast pumps, battery powered
breast pumps and electric breast pumps. All types of breast pumps are safe to
use and they are highly hygienic too.
A breast pump will have a cone-shaped cup
which needs to be fixed on the breast of the mother and then it will have a small
pump for the suction of milk and finally the pumped milk will get stored in a
container that can be detached from the devices and can be used for preserving
the milk for up to 8 hours.
How They
Work
Breast pump mechanism is similar to that of
the suction of a baby. Babies on an average will have a sucking pattern of
around 40 to 60 times in a minute and breast pumps too exert milk using the
same amount of pressure and pumping
frequency that will not hurt the mother.
While
the basic mechanism of the breast pumps remains the same, there is a miniscule
difference exists between the manual and battery or electric breast pumps.
Manual pumps need to be operated by the mother using a pump that will slowly
squeeze out milk. But battery and electric breast pumps automatically pump out
the milk when they are connected
Where to Buy
The cost of breast pumps ranges between Rs
1500 – Rs. 4000. The breast pums are available in all maternity care stores and
also they are available online in maternity care online stores like
