Although with the other dresses coming into the fashion, like western clothes and much more simple ones like salwar and Kameez, Saris are still preferred as the de riguer attrire for all the events , formal time and festivals.
If you happen to travel to the various parts of the india, you will find a range of country highlights and versions of the sarees available in each state. For example, west Bengal has its famous cotton tangials and dhaniakhalis along with Murshidabads and Baluchori silks. The average Bengali women would prefer simple pretted cotton with Highlighted and broad border. Cotton sarees are easy to manage and very comfortable during the hot summer months. Silk sarees everywhere are more of formal wear.
Go to Orissa you would find their lovely Ikkat, sambhalpuri and Kotki sarees. The kanjiwaram saree of the south India is must have for every woman in love with the sarees. However the most famous and expensive ones are the Banarasi sarees which is woven in silk, and Gold or silver threads. These extravagenet banarasi saries is Specialty of the region Banaras in Utter Pradesh. Its must have for every marriage.
